This unusual woodcut by Swedish artist Thure Dahlbeck (1911-1981) depicts three figures sitting around a campfire in a forest. They appear to be in uniform and perhaps they’re scouts.
With this charming piece, Dahlbeck provides an unusual window whereby we’re looking through trees towards the fire. In each corner, he’s created an animal - including owls, a fox and squirrel. The fire seems to spiral upwards like a story told among good friends under moonlight.
Dahlbeck was the son of a stonemason and studied at the Essem school in Malmö.
