This early 20th-century oil on canvas by Danish artist Kay Christensen (1899-1981) depicts a room during his stay in Bormes les Mimosas on the Côte d'Azur, France. It’s a beautiful piece, brimming with continental panache. Note how the chair in the foreground interacts with the angle of the bed. And how the colour of the mirror plays with those around it.
Christensen was honing his craft while in France. In 1927, he was 28 years old. This period left a lasting impression on the young artist and, as he progressed, he blended the expressive style of French modernity with a darker sense of Nordic mysticism.
