This mid-20th-century oil on canvas by Belgian artist Jean Govaerts (1897-1985) depicts a seated friend. His eyes are heavy and he carries a weary expression. He’s leaning forward as if interacting. Can you imagine the conversation?
This accomplished work is, for us, one of Govaerts finest. It exudes character and communicates an unusual mood in muted tones.
Govaerts trained at the Brussels Academy and several of his works are held in public collections including the Museum of Brussels.
