This mid-20th-century oil on canvas by Swedish artist Ivan Bergdahl (1929-2021) depicts an Autumnal landscape in technicolour. The Abiskojokk river rushes over stones and cuts through the tree-lined scenery. Each tree picked out in shades of orange and green. There’s a vivid decorative beauty to this piece, emphasised by the complementary colours of blue and orange. It’s alive, full of interest and striking.
Bergdahl was a member of the Swedish Artists’ Association and produced an array of delightful landscape paintings throughout his career. Influenced perhaps by Vincent Van Gogh (1853-1890), his bold approach to colour adds a sense of dynamism to his works.
