This 20th-century oil on canvas by Swedish artist Gunnar Skanby (1922-2002) depicts a chilly snow-covered landscape with a river. Deep footprints scatter the white scenery and extend past trees that cling to their final leaves. The river appears like a void that twisted branches lurch towards.
Skanby studied at the Royal Swedish Academy of Fine Arts in Stockholm and Copenhagen. He’s represented in various public collections including at the Nationalmuseum.
